Oleksandr Usyk Adopts Unconventional Training Methods

Reigning heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk is taking an innovative approach to his training, incorporating elements of mixed martial arts to enhance his skills in the ring.

Usyk: "Wrestling and Sambo Improve My Strikes"

The Ukrainian boxer shared insights into his unique training methods in an interview with Home of Fight:

“Wrestling, jiu-jitsu, judo, sambo — all of these offer excellent mechanics. They develop the hips and improve striking. Most people rely solely on their hands, but I practice judo and kickboxing.”

Usyk’s Recent Triumphs

In December 2024, Usyk once again solidified his status as a champion, defending his WBA, WBO, WBC, and The Ring titles. At an event in Riyadh, he defeated Tyson Fury via unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring the fight 116-112.

Earlier in May, Usyk became the undisputed heavyweight champion after defeating the "Gypsy King" for the first time. That fight ended with a split decision: 115-112, 114-113, and 113-114.

Who’s Next for Usyk?

Usyk’s next challenge could come from British contender Daniel Dubois, who currently holds the IBF heavyweight title.

Usyk’s Unique Approach

By incorporating MMA techniques into his training, Usyk continues to evolve as a fighter. His unconventional methods not only help him retain his championship status but also position him as one of the most versatile athletes in boxing today.
